IEEE Introductory Event 2009-2010
December 24, 2009 - IEEE Introductory Event is a one day event that aims to introduce IEEE to the attendees, tell them about AlexSB Activities and help the fresh electrical engineering students decide whether to join “Communications & Electronics” section or “Electrical Power and Automatic Control” section. Being a series of advisory sessions, the event doesn’t forget about soft skills. The IEEE introductory event for the year 2009-2010 took place on Friday 18th December 2009 at the “Student Activities Hall”, Alexandria University Stadium.

The event started at 2:00 PM as the attendees started to flow into the hall. As the attendees took their seats, some IEEE documentary videos were playing on the screen.

At 2:30 PM, the first session started. This session aimed to tell the attendees about IEEE. What is IEEE? What is its vision? IEEE History, Some facts about IEEE, IEEE designated fields and what are the benefits of being an IEEE member? Prof. Dr Essam Sorour, Alexandria Student Branch Advisor was the Speaker.

At 3:00 PM, Amr Essam; IEEE AlexSB Volunteer gave an informative session about AlexSB; what are we? What is AlexSB organization hierarchy? He, then, showed the AlexSB membership profile: what activities does the AlexSB provide to the attendees. These include courses, contests, seminars, conferences; whether S-PACs or S-PDCs, study groups, local publications (Wall magazine), the exclusive offers with New Horizons center and the free courses. This session ended with a documentary video showing all AlexSB activities during year 2008-2009. All the attendees were impressed by this video.

After 30 minutes (prayer break), we were back to continue our day with the third session: ”Electronics and Communications Engineering” Prof. Dr Essam Sorour talked about the topics that fall under the “Electronics and Communications” theme, What do you study as an engineer in this field? And where can you work?

At 5:15 pm, Dr Mohamed El Habrouk of Alexandria University talked about “Electrical Power and Automatic Control”. He started his talk with how people are thinking about power engineers. A power Engineer is the one who deals with cables, Trans and wires!!! Is it true? That’s what Dr Mohamed El Habrouk showed us. He also showed the attendees the importance of the electrical power Engineer and the electrical machines Engineer or automation Engineer. He, then, ended his talk with: What do you study as an engineer in this field? This session is ended with a video showing an example of an automation control system.

At 6:15, it was time for our last session of the day which was a very interesting soft-skills session,” Career Planning”. Eng.Ahmed Abd El Aziz of Vodafone Egypt was the speaker. The session allowed us to know: who am I? What do I have to offer? What do I want? Create my vision, Believe in myself, take an action and finally celebrate my successes. This session ended at 8:15 PM with a video called “Life Is like a Cup of Coffee”,

The IEEE Introductory event was, once again, a great hit and an event worth attending. For those of you who missed it this year, I hope you’ll be able to join us next year.
