Embedded Systems Workshop
Published on: March 21, 2011, category: Workshops

On Friday, 18 March, 2011, Embedded Systems workshop was held at Meeting Room(C), BACC (Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Center) from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM.

The workshop started by Eng. Kareem Abdel El-Wahab, a graduate from Faculty of Electronic Engineering-Menoufia University and works at Embedded Fab. He talked about the Embedded Systems applications and its market in Egypt. Eng.Mohamed elsobky - embedded software engineer working at valeo - then talked about software engineering and its process.

The session was very interesting & interactive due to the way the presenters led the workshop & the videos that they showed featuring different embedded systems implementations that benefit our lives.

Robot Modeling and Control
Published on: December 22, 2010, category: Seminars

“IEEE Alex SB should provide a connection between mechanical and electrical department”. Applying this principle, the IEEE team had thought of making a seminar that connects different engineering fields. On Monday, 20th of December 2010, Alex SB organized a seminar under the title “Robot modeling and control” By Dr. Mohamed El Gohary which took place in room 104, Electrical building, Faculty of Engineering.

The seminar started at 15:30 pm. Dr El Gohary started his speech by the origin of the word “Robot”, why do we need robots in our lives and how the mechanical and electrical engineers are both concerned with robots manufactory. Then talking about how can we give commands to the robots, he discussed the different kinds of control and how can we choose their joints.

Later, he moved on into the modeling stage of the robot by the aid of some videos and PDFs, showing how robots may also be used in fire fighting. Crossing from this part to the robot sensing which makes it different from a machine.

The seminar ended at 17:00 pm.

Many of the attendees were interested in similar series of sessions to get more involved and aware of robots technology.

Software Testing with Unit Tests and Mocks
Published on: December 15, 2010, category: Seminars

This session started at 2:00 pm by Ms. Sally Nabil, Senior Software Engineer - POET Egypt. All the attendees seemed to be concentrating and following the speaker’s notes as they were answering the questions she gave from time to time.

The speaker showed great presentation skills and covered the topic very well with a lot of code examples, which captures the attendees’ attention and increases the power of the session.

The session started by showing the importance of testing and its types then the speaker explained how to design testing. Going from that she introduced JUnit testing as an example for a testing framework and clarifies it with a lot of code examples. At the end the speaker introduced Mock Objects and how to use them in unit testing.

The session ended at 3:00 pm with a lot of requests from the students to extend it a little bit as they were in need of more examples covering this interesting topic.

Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Workshop
Published on: October 11, 2010, category: Workshops

On Saturday, 9th of October 2010, IEEE Alex SB organized a workshop about "Printed Circuit Board Design and Fabrication" in K3. It was presented by Dr.Hossam Eldin Mostafa, The Head of Research and Development, Subsea Petroleum Services and Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering.

The workshop started at 5.30 pm and its main goal is to provide students with useful information about Electronic Circuits design.

Firstly, Dr.Hossam talked about the reason and importance of using printed circuit board and its design flow, then he showed in detail the steps of fabrication with aid of sketches, finally he explained an example for design timer 555 and discussed the items for prototyping and Pcb art work transfer.

The workshop ended at 8:00 pm with thankful word.
