A few hours ago, our world has been celebrating the beginning of a new year, full of hope and energy. For IEEE Alexandria University Student Branch (AlexSB), it was different, as we were not only celebrating the beginning of 2009, but also celebrating the end of what happened in 2008. Actually, what IEEE AlexSB did in 2008, was - collectively - a remarkable Egyptian achievement.

Crossing the 900 student members borderline, IEEE AlexSB is now the largest IEEE Student Branch in Region 8 (Europe, Middle-east and Africa), and one of the top IEEE student branches worldwide.

Adding to the annual branch activities and events, organized by the branch every year, such as the on-campus courses, seminars and study-groups, 2008 also witnessed many new and very successful events.

Starting with FREE weekly crash courses in the internationally-renowned training center: New Horizons CLC, covering many important technical and non-technical topics such as UNIX, MS Office and GSM technologies. Passing by "AlexSB Technical Presentations Contest" held in the summer, which helped our members to develop their public-speaking skills in a competitive environment.

Also we shouldn't forget about "Interact with Today's World" conference, or ITW for short, held in Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which was the second-largest IEEE event in Egypt, after the GOLD's Egyptian Engineering Day (EED). ITW discussed important and up-to-date technical and non-technical topics, led by speakers from the Government, Academia and Industry.

"To achieve best membership benefits to its members, the branch also worked on offering various exclusive offers on training courses in international and local training centers, which in some cases included 60% discounts off some courses" said Amr El-Deeb, IEEE Alexandria University Student Branch chairman for the year 2008. He added: "All these successful activities pushed Craig Causer, managing editor of IEEE Potentials to write an article of 2.5 pages, entitled "A Pearl of Wisdom" about AlexSB achievements, in October issue of the magazine."

And, this is only the beginning...

IEEE Alexandria University Student Branch: For a better world, for a better Egypt.
